I am the light of the world (2)

I am the light of the world (2)

"Jesus still spoke to them: I am the light of the world; the one who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but he will have the light of the life." Jean 8:12

This second "I am", pronounced by Jesus, echoed the prediction of Ésaïe about the Messiah: he had to throw the light not only in Israel but in the whole world. "I shall give you to be a light of nations" (Ésaïe 49:6).

The God-given light "shine in the darkness": she shows us the real face of the world around us, and revealed in our heart what we want to hide it. She "light every man" (Jean 1:5, 9), but his effect always depends on the way she is received. We can hide in front of her or avoid her, such these insects which run to hide somewhere else when we lift the stone which sheltered them. She is then ineffective. "The men better liked the darkness than the light." But if the heart is really committed - as underlines it the expression: "the one who follows me" - she is a guide and a source of blessing. For him, she is "the light of the life".

To follow Jesus, it is to trust him for all which concerns me - he loves me, he is wiser than me - and obey him in all that he tells me. "I, the light, I came in the world so that whoever believes in me do not stay in the darkness", says Jesus (Jean 12:46).

The people of God advanced formerly on the Promised Land by following the thick cloud, which lit him and led him. So, Jesus walks with us today, and his Word is a light on our path (Psalm 119:105).
